The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur or IIT KGP) is a Public Institution located in the city of Kharagpur, West Bengal, India. The Chairman and Director of the institute are Shiv Nadar, Partha Pratim Chakraborty. The institute was established in 1951 by the government of India. It is an engineering, management and law institution. The institute has various departments such as Aerospace Engineering, Agricultural & Food Engineering, Architecture & Regional Planning, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Electrical Communication Engineering, Geology & Geophysics, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical & Materials Engineering, Mining Engineering, Ocean Engineering & Naval Architecture, Physics & Meteorology Centers, Materials Science, Reliability Engineering, Rubber Technology, Rural Development Schools. The institute conducts the Graduate aptitude test for engineering (GATE) examination. This year also the institute has been conducting the written examination for GATE 2014.
